The United Nations declared International Women’s Day for the first time in 1977. However, one of the earliest appeals for women’s rights dates back to 1848, when Americans Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott convened the first women’s rights assembly in the United States at an anti-slavery convention.
On February 28, 1909, the inaugural Women’s Day was observed in the United States. This day commemorates the 1908 New York garment workers’ strike, during which women protested poor working conditions.
Years later, on the last Sunday of February, which was February 23; this day was March 8 according to the Gregorian calendar, women in Russia chose to protest and strike for “food and peace” on the last Sunday of February, which was February 23.
Because Russia had not embraced the Gregorian calendar before the revolution, 23 February in 1917 equated to 8 March in the rest of Europe.
