“The Power of the Dog” Won the Golden Globes Award for Best Film
News Times Link: Netflix movie ‘The Power of the Dog’ became the best drama movie and Walt Disney Company’s “West Side Story” became the Best Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globe Awards, held in private without a live or online audience. Hollywood has instigated a boycott of the event.
The awards ceremony held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California on Sunday night didn’t feature any celebrities or sarcastic remarks it was famous for in the past. After longtime media partner NBC pulled out last year, the event’s organizers, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, originally planned to air the show on their website, but canceled the plan last week.
Streaming services, including Netflix, don’t do much to deliver crisp data that’s as easy as looking at the box office charts. But films like “The Power of the Dog,” the slow-burn western starring Benedict Cumberbatch, and the star-studded satire “Don’t Look Up” have clearly become favorites among Netflix subscribers.
However, the group’s selection of “The Power of the Dog” as their best drama of the year seems to reflect their message to other shows.
We don’t know if this math will last forever, but for now, no matter how blurry the streaming data may be, “The Power of the Dog” is a hit, which could help bring additional sizzle to an awards system challenged on multiple fronts.
