Russian Forces Near Ukraine Moved Into “Attack Position”
News Times Link: According to US officials, Russia has threatened Ukraine by deploying several long-range artillery and rocket launchers at the launch site. According to officials, some Russian units left the staging area in bumper-to-bumper formations visible in satellite imagery and began moving into “combat positions”. This move is a change from Sunday, when some units have left the muster area but have not yet taken up what could be seen as an attack position.
The U.S. believes Russia will attack Ukraine by the end of the week, although it’s not yet certain what form it will take, the official said.
As soon as a Russian attack begins, American awareness of what is going on will decline sharply. The US military will have no troops on the ground, no reconnaissance aircraft in the air, and Russian cyberattacks and electronic warfare will cut off communications.
US officials say Russia now has 80% of the forces needed for a full-scale invasion, with the rest in progress. More than 100,000 Russian troops are concentrated along the Ukrainian border. East, Russia, North Belarus.
National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan warned on Sunday morning on Face Nation that Russian President Vladimir Putin could order an invasion “at almost any time”. “In the last 10 days we have seen the buildup of Russian forces and the rapid acceleration of the deployment of these forces in such a way that they can launch hostilities at almost any moment,” said Sullivan. “They can do it next week, but of course they are still waiting for orders,” Putin said.
Sullivan acknowledged that Russia could possibly launch a false flag attack in Donbass, Ukraine, to justify its aggression, saying the US is “looking very closely”. In this case, Sullivan said Russian intelligence could “attack a Russian proxy or a Russian citizen in eastern Ukraine and then blame it on the Ukrainians.” On Monday, Sullivan briefs parliamentary leaders on the latest situation in Ukraine. On Saturday, President Biden warned Russian President Vladimir Putin that the United States would “respond decisively and suffer quick and serious losses” if Russia invaded Ukraine.
