News Times Link: Mikaela Shiffrin broke the record for most World Cup victories in a single discipline by winning the last World Cup slalom before the Olympics.
Shiffrin took another 47th slalom win, one more then Swedish legend Ingemar Stenmark‘s giant slalom total from the 1970s and ’80s.
Shiffrin, who was waiting at the bottom for Vlhova to finish, was surprised that the Slovak woman did not beat her, then bent over the upholstery and seemed to be crying.
She attributed these feelings, at least in part, to the importance of winning the night race in Schladming, Austria, a legendary venue primarily used for men’s races.
Shiffrin’s main rival over the past few years, Vlhova sparked the spark of winning 5 of 7 slalom competitions at the World Cup this season. Shiffrin also won the race in Killington, Vermont on November 28, after first race leader Vlhova made a mistake in the second qualifying round and finished second.
Shiffrin said for the first time that she hopes to compete in all five individual events at the Olympics. She can compete in any game of her choice in the Giants Slalom (currently 2nd in the world, 1 GS left in Beijing) and an overall match not in this season’s World Cup. Shiffrin won the combine at her last year’s world championships. Read More
