On Memorial Day in Florida, a shootout broke out between two groups of beach-goers, injuring nine people, three of whom were children. Six people and three children were injured in a shooting between two men on Johnson Street near the Hollywood Oceanfront Boardwalk, according to police and medical officials. Hollywood Beach, which is about 11 miles south of Fort Lauderdale and 20 miles north of Miami, is a well-known and popular beach resort, and a lot of tourists were expected over the Memorial Day holiday.

Deanna Bettineschi, a spokeswoman for the Hollywood Police Department, told reporters at the scene that several patients were taken to Memorial Regional Hospital and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital for treatment. But at present the police have not made public the age of the victims.

A representative for the memorial, Yanet Obario Sanchez, told POLITICO that all of the victims were reported to be in stable condition. While the second person is being actively searched, the police have already taken one person into custody in connection with the incident. A black male with dreadlocks wearing a black short-sleeved shirt and camouflage shorts was the second suspect.

Footage shared in the immediate aftermath of the incident on social media showed medics and police officers tending to injured victims, some of whom lay motionless on the sand. The shooting occurred at approximately 6:42 p.m. On the boardwalk near a convenience store, a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream shop, and a Subway sandwich restaurant.

According to eyewitness Alvie Carlton Scott III, he was on the beach when he suddenly heard multiple gunshots, according to Politico. He eventually left the location after being told by a police officer to hide behind a tree. A second eyewitness at the site, Jamie Ward, told the source that a group of youths got into a physical confrontation in front of the shops, which resulted in one of them brandishing a gun and opening fire.

Law enforcement officials have announced a large deployment of officers in response to the incident to maintain a strong presence during the current investigation. This increased presence is being used for the safety of the public and to facilitate speedy disposal of the case. Officials are also planning to set up a space where family members can be reunited.
