Want to Remove Gemini From Gmail? Here’s the Hidden Setting—And the Catch
Google has been rapidly integrating its AI assistant Gemini into many of its products, including Gmail. The AI can summarize long email threads, suggest replies, and even help draft messages using features like “Help Me Write.”
For some users, these tools are convenient and save time. But others find them intrusive or simply unnecessary, especially if they prefer writing emails themselves. As a result, many Gmail users have been looking for a way to remove Gemini from their inbox.
The good news is that it’s possible to disable the AI assistant. The bad news is that doing so comes with a trade-off.
How Gemini Works Inside Gmail
Gemini is part of Google’s broader push to integrate artificial intelligence across its services. In Gmail, it can scan your inbox and provide helpful features such as email summaries, smart suggestions, and quick replies.
These tools rely on Gmail’s “smart features” system, which allows Google to analyze your email content in order to provide personalized assistance. When enabled, Gemini can automatically extract key details from messages or help you generate responses.
While the feature is designed to improve productivity, some users are uncomfortable with AI analyzing their messages—even if it’s done automatically by Gmail.
The Trick to Turning Gemini Off
Disabling Gemini isn’t obvious because Google hides the setting inside Gmail’s broader “smart features” controls.
To turn it off, open Gmail on a desktop browser and follow these steps:
- Click the Settings gear icon in the top-right corner.
- Select “See all settings.”
- Scroll down to Google Workspace smart features.
- Click “Manage Workspace smart feature settings.”
- Turn off Smart features in Google Workspace.
Once this option is disabled, Gemini’s AI features—such as email summaries and writing assistance—will stop appearing in Gmail.
This change also removes Gemini tools from other Workspace apps like Docs and Drive, since they rely on the same settings.
The Catch: You Lose More Than Just Gemini
Here’s where things get complicated. Turning off Gemini requires disabling Gmail’s smart features, and those features power several useful tools.
For example, disabling them can also remove:
- Smart Compose suggestions
- Automatic email categorization (like Promotions or Social tabs)
- Event detection that adds travel plans or appointments to your calendar
- Smart reply suggestions
In other words, removing Gemini doesn’t just eliminate AI assistance—it can also reduce some of Gmail’s most helpful productivity features.
Some users feel this “all-or-nothing” approach is frustrating because it forces them to give up useful tools simply to avoid AI features.
A Partial Workaround
There is a slightly better option that allows you to keep some Gmail features while limiting Gemini. Instead of disabling all smart features, you can open Manage Workspace smart feature settings and turn off Smart features in Google Workspace specifically.
This prevents Gemini summaries and AI-driven tools from appearing in Gmail and other Workspace apps while keeping some Gmail features intact.
However, the setting is still somewhat hidden, and Google hasn’t made it particularly easy to find.
Why It’s Hard to Escape AI Features
Google is investing billions into AI technology, so it’s no surprise the company is pushing Gemini across its ecosystem. Gmail, Docs, Drive, and other Workspace tools are becoming increasingly AI-powered.
That means users may see more AI features appearing in the future, whether they want them or not. For now, disabling smart features is the main way to reduce Gemini’s presence in Gmail.
But the experience highlights a broader challenge in modern software: as AI becomes more integrated into everyday apps, avoiding it entirely may become harder than ever.
